She Matters - Art Show

An art showcase, where artists Heetal and Shweta put brush to canvas to take you deeper into the emotional, mental and cultural landscape of today’s Indian woman. Dipping into their rich experience as storytellers and design experts, Heetal and Shweta conjure stories through colour, texture and form. These visually rich stories are a glimpse into their nuanced and insightful understanding of this space. Every story is a journey of conflict between the way ‘She’ is viewed through the lens of tradition, stereotypes and societal influences, and how ‘She’ really views herself.

The External Gaze

Acrylic and charcoal on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Price on Request

In an age where everyone is constantly projecting a perfect life on social media, the edges between reality and fantasy become amorphous, bleeding into each other seamlessly. The world is continuously watching through various filters. She moves between good, bad, moral, immoral, ethical, unethical through infinitely judging eyes. The only constant through her ever-evolving world is this external gaze. But she knows that she isn’t defined by what they see. What they see, is only half her story. When she stops looking through their eyes, she finds herself. The world can keep looking, but she is already found.

Shades of Beauty

Acrylic and gold leaf on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Beauty is a powerful ally, a double-edged sword.

We live in a world that views her skin, her hair, her eyes as a score card. And she grows up learning that it’s important to keep score. But her relationship with beauty is both external and internal. She flows from owning and disowning her vanity at the same time, finding that illusive balance as she navigates her place in the world.

Colourless

Acrylic and gold leaf on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

She is the soil, the sunlight and the soul that nurtures the world around her. She leaves traces of her sparkle in everyone and everything she touches. Is it possible that one day the colour she breathes into the world leaves her colourless? Will she continue to be the source? Will she be able to find the colour within her, to colour her world?

Imperfectly Perfect

Acrylic on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Inspired by Kintsugi- a Japanese art form, where broken things are fixed with liquid gold - a metaphor for embracing our flaws and imperfections.

There is an invisible crack that scars every woman. A crack that stretches, twists and contorts her reality. It is never too far from her consciousness, reminding her gently of her brokenness. The crack is a web of trials and errors, a mish mash of broken dreams and dashed hopes. But she, who owns the stars, knows how to seal the cracks with the gold dust of her dreams. She may forever be a work in progress. A constant evolution of give and take. But she is completely and beautifully whole in spite of her cracks. She is perfect in her imperfection.

The Invisible Thread

Acrylic and mixed media on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Price on request

A woman’s flame flickers more brightly when it is reflected in the eyes of another woman - encouraging, supporting, sharing. It is usually a network, an endless thread, an army, a gentle, reliable source of power - made up of mothers, friends, sisters, colleagues, even strangers who extend a hand in acknowledgement for all the hats that she wears. It takes a woman to enable and empower another to truly live her shine. To glow, inspire and claim her spotlight with pride. This is a celebration of this deep, intuitive machinery of strong and supportive women, who know that when one shines, we all shine.

Wonder

Acrylic and silver leaf on acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Price on request

She grows up too quickly, seamlessly slipping into the role of a nurturer, as is expected. Along the way, she forgets the child within - the one who’s eyes sparkle with wonder, the one who believes in magic. She forgets to stop and smell the flowers as she rushes to be a wife, mother, a career woman. And then one fine day, as she breathes in the scent of past memories and forgotten passions, her inner child knocks at her heart, begging to be appeased. She must remind herself to nurture this inner child. To always keep her alive, as her true essence shines only through the eyes of this untouched being.

Slotted

Mixed media on wood and acid-free paper

Size: 36.5” X 28.5”

Price on request

She is the player of many roles, the wearer of many hats, the dreamer of many dreams. And in her, lies the magnificence to shine in every role she plays. While she seamlessly flows from one role to another, the world views her through slots that label her as a child, a wife, a mother, a career woman. The world doesn’t allow the boundaries to merge. The world doesn’t realize how she seamlessly flows from one label to another. How she draws strength and power from each label, yet living in none of them. This is an ode to the woman who seeks freedom from the slots through which she is viewed. To every woman who is glorified, judged and celebrated in slots, but never as a whole.

Beyond the Kitchen

Acrylic and resin on brass thaals

Size: 14” diameter, 17” diameter, 21” diameter

Price on request

Her world extends way beyond the kitchen in which she feeds the bellies, hopes and dreams of her family. This world stretches beyond the confines of your imagination.

In this world, she has wings that give flight to her own personal ambitions. Her empire has no boundaries, and her possibilities are limitless, much like the skies. In her queendom, she gazes within, and finds all the validation, love and accolades she needs. She floats in this ether, the weight of responsibilities melting away. Her only purpose is to be entirely and truly herself.

Drowning 1

Acrylic and mixed media on Canvas

Size: diameter 32”

Price on request

She lives in an ocean of her own making. She floats and sometimes drowns in the waters of her own universe. Swirling violently through whirlpools of societal expectations, navigating the boulders of patriarchy and conditioning. Swimming in vast seas of responsibilities, she stays afloat while clutching onto the driftwood of her own dreams. Somehow, she finds equilibrium in the pools of contentment and confidence. But the waves of judgment and objectification are not too far away. As she is carried away by the tides of emotion and duty, the grains of youth and beauty slipping rapidly through her fingers, she realizes that while she may not be able to control the current, she can clutch onto the branch of acceptance and self-belief. She takes a deep breath, owning and embracing the waters of her existence, and she is free.

There are a million women in our country. A million faces, a million stories. Every temperament and texture different from the other. Every story and adventure richer than the other. Millions of women, co-existing together to weave an intricate tapestry of beauty, diversity and magic. And when we see this tapestry of vibrant colour, character and infinite beauty, we realize just how glorious and magnificent it is, to be ‘Her’.

Adding Colour to the world

Acrylic on canvas

Size: 41” x 65”

Price on request

She is the bearer of all humanity. She births, nurtures and nourishes. She cares, loves and gives, often till there’s little left to give. When her own dreams have dried, when her internal world feels grey, she dawns the cloak of colour and keeps infusing our world with vibrance. Generations of women have put the world first, ahead of their own needs. Given all their colour to make the world colourful. The magic cloak keeps giving, so she can rise above her internal greyness and keep impacting the world in a way that only she can.

Shadow Play

Acrylic and gold leaf on textured canvas

Size: 39” x 75”

She lives in the shadow of her responsibilities. Her true colours only peeking gently and apologetically through a haze of conditioning and stereotypes. Everyday, she strives to shine a little brighter, so that her light pierces through the thick strokes of expectations. And one day, slowly the clouds will melt away and she will stand, unobstructed and true, owning her light completely.

Balance

Acrylic and mixed media on Canvas

Size: 23.5” X 55.5”

Price on request

She is a woman of today. She navigates between various landscapes, finding her place with ease wherever she goes. She seamlessly finds her balance between the black and white world of yesterday, which is her inheritance, and looks to amalgamate it with a colourful future of her own making. And just like that, she creates a language, a universe that is uniquely hers.

Blending In

Acrylic on an antique wooden frame

Size: 29” X 17”

Price on request

She is taught at an early age to be one with her environment. To be grey when the world is grey . Never dare to shine too bright, lest she stands out too much. Never talk too loud, lest she is heard too much. Dress, eat, walk and behave the way everyone else does. Blend in, like a quiet ripple of samenes that will never challenge, upset and unsettle the status quo. But slowly, ever so slowly, she emerges, with a unique voice, tone, views and opinions all her own. The world may be inconvenienced, but she is blooming. And can’t be bothered to blend in anymore.

Shared Secrets

Acrylic on antique wooden shutters

Every woman has secrets within. Some playful and humorous, some dark and heavy. Thoughts, feelings, views and opinions that she dare not share with the world. Every woman also has a soul sister - the keeper of her secrets. A mirror to her feelings, a close confidante who shares her joy and sorrows and promises to always hold her secrets tightly to her chest. Hopes, dreams and fears that are revealed to one another behind closed doors. Whispers that will forever stay locked away, behind the shutters of a mutual and precious bond of sisterhood.
